The Problem for Progressives with Racial Self-Indentification
If people are allowed to pick their own race, how will policies like affirmative action be maintained? No, progressives depend on race far too much to allow the self-definition they praise in other areas into racial matters.
Not so much. While these questions are asked, they are always self reported or declined as there is never any force behind them. They are only used as indicators based on self identification.
ReplyDeleteNot so much what? (What a stupid phrase, by the way.)
DeleteAre you saying affirmative action, for, say, universities, can still work if every college applicant lists themselves as black?!
Gene, this is a hilariously politically incorrect comment, but it is still funny.
ReplyDeleteI don't think any actual progressive supports "I'll take your word for it" as a standard, and testing for cultural identification is a "solved problem" in the sense of already being used by e.g. immigration offices. I don't think progressives are somehow painted into a corner if forced to accept that "hey, some biologically-white people might be able to legitimately identify as black in some contexts" (e.g. having been raised by adoptive black parents in a black neighborhood).

DeleteI'm not sure what you're saying here. In what context don't they support this?
Affirmative action.
DeleteWell exactly: that's my point!
DeleteWhereas for sexual identity, that generally *do* support "I'll take your word for it."
