The Flight from Reality
The truth must not be mentioned:
George P. Lakoff, a professor of cognitive science and linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, has looked at the way the term is used by those who try to portray gays and lesbians as deviant. What is most telling about substituting it for gay or lesbian are the images that homosexual tends to activate in the brain, he said. “Gay doesn’t use the word sex,” he said. “Lesbian doesn’t use the word sex. Homosexual does.”Homosexuals are different from heterosexuals in terms of who they wish to have... sex with, right? But per Lakoff, it is not cool for the words we use to describe this fact to include the letters "sex" anywhere.
It's like accelerated linguistic evolution.

ReplyDeleteActually, the really telling difference is who you fall in love with.
"Actually, the really telling difference is who you fall in love with."
ReplyDeleteAh, I see! So the fact I fell in love with each of my children when they were born means I am a pedophile?!
But thanks for offering a further example of the flight from reality, Lorenzo!
