It's Conspiracies All the Way Down!

Tyler Cowen notes research showing that belief in completely contradictory conspiracy theories is positively correlated.

Grist for this mill: how about a web site that holds both that:
1) The theory of evolution is a bunch of rubbish being pawned off on us by our statist masters?
and
2) The paleo diet is a vital breakthrough, based on the theory of evolution, being hidden from us by our statist masters?

I bet you can find one if you google for a minute or two.

  1. Somehow I suspect what site I'm going to find if I google these two things, and though I can see why it's funny, it's also true that many persons write for that site. So, it's not that wild to have these two assertions made (unless, of course, you're telling me that the same person, in a short span of time, wrote both).

  2. Yes, Pedro, it's true there are many authors, but there is just one editor, with strong editorial control. I don't know if he believes either view, but so long as it involves a conspiracy, it will get published!

  3. I didn't even Google it.

I'll be damned if I am wrong. I might be, since I have not visited the site in over a year.

But yeah, paleo diet + creationism = LRC, IMO.

  4. You got it in one, Prateek!

There's a solution to both those views. Though I'm sure it could sound exceedingly strange; but strange does not imply it is wrong.

  6. I don't understand what it means for views to have a "solution."

Well, when you say it like that, neither do I.

I think I meant this: I thought you were saying that the anti-evolution and pro-paleo diet views are mutually contradictory positions. I offered a 'solution' as possible, that could sound strange. That is, a 'solution' to how two apparently contradictory 'views' that seem to hold contradictory world views could be reconciled.

  8. OK, Father Fetter, tell me how the views that:

    1) evolution never happened; and
    2) evolution fitted us out for a particular sort of diet

    can be reconciled?

What do you mean by evolution? Does the person in question deny both micro and macro evolution? It is entirely possible to believe that God directly created Adam in a singluar action, and then, after the Fall of Man, humanity evolved in many minor manners (minor compared to one species transforming into another), many of which are in line with a paleo type diet.

If, however, the person in question denies any changes whatsoever taking place (that is, micro evolution), then, yes, I think you are correct.

And, Mr. Callahan, I am sorry if I sounded attacking in my previous posts, or unkind. I should have been more careful in my choice of words.

  10. Father Fetter, is someone is a biblical literalist, there was no long period before civilization when mankind adapted to the paleo diet, so it doesn't matter whether or not the person believes in micro evolution.

    you have a point there

  12. It's not always the same person, but some LRC columnists said that Arab Spring uprisings were a grassroots rebellion and not an Al Qaeda front (see Justin Raimondo), and some LRC columnists said that CIA and American interests sponsored the overthrow of Mubarak for being a future liability to US interests.

Now, the editors of the website look at both such columns and publish both of them.

Do they sit on the fence here? Do they believe there is a strong case for both of them? Or are they willing to host opposing views?

It's not clear, but I suspect it happened this way. When the US government was neutral or ambivalent on uprisings, internet libertarians were for the uprisings. When the US government announced support, they believed it was CIA
