The Most Useless, Common Sentence in Academic Papers

"In the last section, I conclude."

Oh, really? Right there at the end, in the section titled "Conclusion," that's where you're going to conclude? What a remarkable innovation!

  1. I thought that, contra McCloskey, editors actually do insist for your writing to be as stilted as possible?

    1. In twenty published papers I have managed to never once write, "In the last section, I conclude."

      So at least it isn't mandatory.
